Chapter 5: Mornings That Reboot Your Soul

Chapter 5 of Glow: The New Science of Living Longer

Glow: The New Science of Living Longer cover

Let’s fix mornings.

Not with productivity hacks. Not with 17-step routines. Just with a few minutes of remembering who you are.

Because if you wake up already behind, already rushing, already scrolling — you’re not starting the day. You’re surviving it.

And you deserve better than that.

The 3-Minute Morning Rule

This is the core idea:

Before you do anything for the world — do something for your glow.

That’s it.

Just 3 minutes.

You can stretch it to 10 or 20 later, but the first step is sacred:

  1. Light — natural or red
  2. Breath — even one slow inhale
  3. Signal — a sound, a thought, a message that says, “I’m back.”

The Ritual That Works

Step 1: Light

Your body wants to know what planet it’s on. Give it sunlight. Or red light. Or even bright light from a lamp. Tell your brain: We’re alive. It’s morning. Let’s go.

Time: 30–60 seconds Bonus: Step outside barefoot if you want to feel smugly healthy

Step 2: Breath

Take 3 deep breaths.

Try this:

This activates your parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest and digest” setting your body wants to live in.

Time: 1 minute Bonus: Whisper a little thank you — even if it’s just, “Thanks, lungs.”

Step 3: Signal

Play a soft sound. 528 Hz if you want sciencey. Wind chimes if you want magic. A voice note to yourself if you want real.

Say or hear something that reminds you: “This day is not about catching up — it’s about syncing up.”

Time: 30 seconds Bonus: Smile. Seriously. It confuses your stress and makes your gut bacteria cheer.

What This Does (Even in 3 Minutes)

Optional Glow-Up Bonus

As your practice grows, you can add:

But don’t start big.

Start kind.

TL;DR

Your morning is a message.

Make it say: “I’m not rushing into the world. I’m re-entering myself.”

3 minutes. That’s all it takes.

“I rise gently. I begin with breath. I return to myself before I return to the world.”
