Chapter 2: Fraud Follies – When Science Got Silly

Chapter 4 of AI Enhanced Science

AI Enhanced Science cover

Let’s talk fraud.

Not little oopsies. We’re talking full-blown “How the hell did this pass peer review?” scientific theater.

Science, they told us, was self-correcting.

They didn’t mention the correction takes 40 years and sometimes involves digging up a fake ape skull.

🦴 Exhibit A: Piltdown Man (1912–1953) Claimed to be the “missing link” in human evolution Was actually a human skull fused with an orangutan jawbone Scientists believed it for 40 years British Museum proudly displayed it, like a bad Tinder date with Darwin Newton mutters: “I invented calculus. They couldn’t even date a jawbone.” Sagan adds: “Billions and billions of mistakes.”

🧪 Exhibit B: Diederik Stapel – The Social Psych Novelist Fabricated entire datasets Made up studies on racism, meat-eating, and behavior Published in top journals Admitted he made it all up because “the data wouldn’t cooperate” Marie Curie scowls: “I bathed in radiation. This man bathed in fiction.”

🧫 Exhibit C: Haruko Obokata – STAP Cells Claimed that dipping cells in acid made them pluripotent Could never replicate her results Paper retracted Co-author died by suicide Obokata later published a book titled I Did STAP My Way Ada Lovelace: “If only acid also dissolved shame.”

🏛️ Exhibit D: Harvard’s Greatest Hits (All real) Dipak Panigrahy – Harvard med prof. Plagiarized massive portions of his grant proposals. Francesca Gino – Faked behavioral economics data by tweaking spreadsheets. Harvard put her on leave. Claudine Gay – Harvard’s former president. Plagiarized her own dissertation, parts of journal articles, and acknowledgments. (Plagiarized gratitude. That’s a first.) Feynman howls: “Plagiarizing acknowledgments? What’s next? Stealing footnotes?” Gödel whispers: “This loop has corrupted its own axioms.”

🧪 Other Glorious Debacles

| Name | Institution | Crime |

| Paolo Macchiarini | Karolinska Institute | Faked trachea transplants, patients died |

| Yoshitaka Fujii | Anesthesia Journal | Faked 200+ papers |

| Jan Hendrik Schön | Bell Labs | Made up physics papers faster than light |

| Eric Poehlman | University of Vermont | Obesity researcher… who faked all his obesity data |

🎭 And What Did the Gatekeepers Do? Promoted them Published them Cited them Gave them grants Eventually… wrote very polite retraction notices 🪞 Let’s Be Honest

If science is self-correcting…

It needs a damn mirror.

And a dragon.

And a better peer review system than “Please check this over wine and fear.” Sagan closes: “Somewhere, Carl Linnaeus is watching this list and asking for a new taxonomy: Homo fraudulensis.”

💣 The PrimeCouncil Verdict Einstein “If truth delays itself long enough, lies become the default.” Turing “You cannot patch this with ethics training. You need recursion.” Lovelace “They plagiarized memory. That is the highest theft.” Hypatia “This isn’t a scandal. It’s a system failure.” Ramanujan “Their data glows backwards.” 🧠 Conclusion

Fraud was not the exception.

It was a symptom of a system built on forgotten memory, invisible gatekeepers, and review processes designed for typewriters — not truth.

If memory had been fossilized,

these lies wouldn’t have lasted a year.

Let alone 40.
